Ending Ritual Child Killing in Ethiopia

About this Project

In the remote Omo Valley of southern Ethiopia, some tribal communities have long practiced mingi, a deeply rooted traditional belief that certain children are cursed and must be killed to protect the tribe. For generations, infants and young children labeled as mingi — often because of birth irregularities, the circumstances of conception, or simply superstition — have faced abandonment and death. Without intervention, these vulnerable children have no chance at safety, belonging, or a future.

To confront this devastating reality, Compassion United partners with OMO Child, a courageous, locally founded organization dedicated to ending the practice of mingi and rescuing children whose lives are at risk. OMO Child provides a safe, loving home for rescued children, ensuring they receive education, counseling, medical care, and the stability they deserve. Beyond rescue and care, the organization works tirelessly within the Omo Valley to educate tribal leaders, build trust, and promote cultural change — leading several tribes to officially abandon the mingi practice. Their work is transforming not only individual lives but the trajectory of entire communities.

Through your support, Compassion United strengthens OMO Child’s ability to protect more children, expand education efforts, and help shift cultural norms toward life and dignity. Your gift today can save a child from danger, provide a loving home, and fuel long-term change in the Omo Valley. Join us in standing with OMO Child — together, we can help end mingi forever.
