Ending Pakistan's Brick Slavery

Across Pakistan, thousands of Christian families remain trapped in modern-day slavery within the nation’s brick kilns. Entire generations are bound by impossible debts—often incurred through small loans for medical care, food, or shelter—that are passed down from parent to child. Laborers work under brutal conditions, mixing mud and forming bricks by hand in sweltering heat for meager pay that never covers the interest on their loans. Children as young as five join their parents in the fields, robbed of education and a future beyond the kiln walls. For many, hope is a luxury they cannot afford.

This exploitation is compounded by deep social and religious discrimination. Christians, who make up a small minority in Pakistan, are often relegated to the lowest tiers of society and denied equal protection under the law. In the brick kilns, this prejudice is both economic and spiritual bondage—families are not only enslaved by debt but marginalized for their faith. The lack of oversight, corruption, and systemic poverty enable the cycle to continue unchecked, as those most in need of justice are the least likely to receive it.
